Ways to Serve this MLK Day
This coming Monday, January 20th, is the MLK Day of Service. It is a day dedicated to honoring a dream for this nation. A dream that relied on people from all walks of life working together to build something better.
It's a day to think about how to give back to others and about how to make your neighborhoods, schools, places of work, and homes, kinder and more just places to be for all.
There are countless big and small ways to celebrate this day. Please consider your local food banks, animal shelters, and children's organizations. Especially considering the LA wildfires, there's an even bigger need this year to rally and really fight for a future for the planet.
As overwhelming as it all might seem, just remember what Dr. King said, "You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step”.
Just think about what matters to you and figure out how you can use what you have to help.
You might see an organization below that you’re passionate about, but if there are other problems in your community and you can find a group doing something about it already, make one. You and your friends and family can band together and take small steps to solving whatever problem your community is facing. It can be as simple as starting a compost pile or neighborhood garden.
Something as simple as reading to someone and spending time with them is a great place to start if you don’t have the time or money or capacity to do other things.
And remember that local libraries have free resources and information on other ways to engage in the community. And tons of books from which you can draw knowledge and guidance no matter what your journey may be. Good luck and remember that we are all in this together.
Local Animal Shelters and Wildlife Centers:
Seattle Humane is taking in many animals from the LA Wildfires and even if you can’t adopt or foster an animal, you can volunteer or donate to the shelter to make sure the animals have care and companionship.
Food Banks: Many of these food banks are served by our local farmers as well.
