Meet Our Farmers: Gracie’s Greens

Farmer Gracie of Gracie’s Greens.

Farmer Gracie of Gracie’s Greens.

This is a love story. Yes about a young couple, yes about a passion for farming and working the land, but mostly about a sweet pup named Gracie.

First, the humans. Zoe and Keller are the two legged farmers behind Gracie’s Greens, vendors beloved at the West Seattle Farmers Market for their delicious microgreens. The pair met six years ago while working on a farm on Vashon Island, WA. In Zoe’s recounting, (“This is kind of cheesy but…”), she and Keller fell for each other over a mutual love of an apparently life altering variety of watermelon. On top of this rock solid foundation, Zoe and Keller also fell in love with working together. When the opportunity arose to farm on and care for a property on the Big Island, Hawaii, they didn’t hesitate. It was on the Big Island where Zoe and Keller first explored growing microgreens, while learning the challenges of farming in an unfamiliar climate.

Enter, Gracie. Perhaps it was a whim, perhaps it was the call of destiny, but one day Keller and Zoe decided to visit their local pound. It was as though Gracie had been waiting for them there all along. When the young couple took Gracie on a little jaunt in the Hawaiian afternoon, she jumped in their truck and has been attached to the pair ever since. Extremely sweet and charismatic, Gracie is a natural born farm dog, the perfect companion for her two hard-working people. in 2018, when Zoe and Keller decided it was time to move back to Washington, Gracie didn’t bat an eye, ready for the next adventure.

Zoe, Keller, and Gracie now have their own half-acre farm on Vashon Island, where along with microgreens and a variety of produce, they grow their own incredible watermelons. The farm was appropriately named for Gracie the dog. Now around six, Gracie spends most of her days by Zoe’s side, the primary caretaker of their land, napping in between beds, hunting voles, and going on trail runs.

”We're passionate about serving our local, (and extended West Seattle), community and strive to provide food to those closest in proximity to us. We have a deep attachment to the land we farm, and care about stewarding it for future generations to enjoy and farm as well.”

Gracie’s microgreens are grown with love in a greenhouse, in soil, with the help of water and light. Next time you’re at the West Seattle Farmers Market, be sure to pick up a box of these incredible greens, and send your regards to Gracie.
