Snack Series
If you’re anything like us, 3 pm hits and you need a snack, stat. We’re all for meal prepping and seasonal eating, but when you’re hungry and hitting that mid-afternoon slump, we’ll take what we can get. We’ve been collecting a list of our favorite snacks that you can make ahead of time (using farmers market ingredients*) so you still satisfy your snacking cravings while supporting local farms.

Freezer Carrot Cake Bars – Love & Lemons
We love carrot cake, and these freezer bar alternatives are a great way to get carrot cake flavors, without doing any baking. These bars come together quickly and are great to have on hand.
Dried Apples – EatingWell
If you have a dehydrator, you’ve probably made dried apple chips at some point, but even if you don’t, you can use your oven to make these sweet and crispy snacky bites. The recipe is super simple, and perfect for a day when you’re planning on lounging at home.
Crispy Roasted Chickpeas – Joy Food Sunshine
This salty snack is high in protein and flavor! Use spices and salt to make a super flavorful crispy chickpea snack. We also like to sprinkle these on top of Alison Roman’s Spiced Chickpea Stew.
Chocolate Hazelnut Bliss Balls – Walder Wellness
Calling all Nutella fans! We all know that chocolate and hazelnut are a perfect pair. These high protein energy balls lean on that match for a delicious snack that could almost be considered a dessert.
Carrot Cake Energy Bites – Walder Wellness
Another no-bake carrot cake recipe! Carrots are super versatile and you can find them at the farmers markets practically all year, so snacks like this are perfect to have in your repertoire.
Trail Mix – Healthy Maven
There’s a reason why trail mix is affectionately known by the nickname “good ol’ raisins and peanuts” or “GORP.” A true do-it-yourself kind of snack, trail mix can include whatever ingredients you have on hand.
Peanut Butter Yogurt Dip – Healthy Fitness Meals
This dip is a slightly elevated version of the apples and peanut butter after school snack of childhood nostalgia. Adding yogurt and cinnamon gives a fun twist to this classic snack.
Deviled Eggs – Spend With Pennies
Okay, so we know that deviled eggs are usually more of an appetizer than a snack, but they will last for a few days in the fridge, and give you an instant protein boost, which is exactly what we want out of our favorite snacks.
Frozen Yogurt Bark – The Jam Jar Kitchen
If you’re a FroYo fan, this frozen yogurt bark should be a freezer staple. Super easy to make and endlessly customizable, there’s no reason not to have this snack on hand at all times.
Kale Chips – The Busy Baker
You either love ‘em or hate ‘em, but you have to admit that kale chips are a healthy snack staple. Easy to make and easy to snack on, there’s a reason why this leafy green had everyone talking about it in 2014.
Fruit Roll Ups – MOMables
This list reflects a lot of “grown-up” versions of our favorite childhood snacks, and fruit roll-ups are no exception. This is a perfect project for all of the frozen berries you’ve been hoarding in your freezer since this summer.
Jalapeno Cheddar Scones – Knead Some Sweets
Even though jalapenos aren’t currently in season, we had to include this on our snack round-up because these scones are the perfect snack, either between breakfast and lunch or lunch and dinner.
Momofuku’s Soy Sauce Eggs – Food52
Momofuku’s Soy Sauce Eggs are the perfect kind of snack because you can eat them at literally any time of day. You can eat them on their own, or add them to meals (soy sauce eggs plus a bowl of ramen, anyone?)
Fried Fava Beans – A Taste of Sicily
Dried peeled fava beans are deep fried and flavored with herbs and spices, and a perfect savory bite that will take you right to Italy or Portugal, where the snack is common.
