Hear Ye, Hear Ye! The City of Seattle Proclaims Farmers Market Week
Did you hear the bells ringing? At the August 2 City Council Meeting, Councilmember Sarah Nelson presented a proclamation announcing August 7-13, 2022 as Farmers Market Week in the City of Seattle!
Farmers markets are more than just an iconic summer hang. They are safe, outdoor spaces for culturally relevant foods, business incubators, contributors to farmland preservation, and hubs of sustainable action for a healthier planet.
The proclamation was a collaboration of the Neighborhood Farmers Markets, the Queen Anne Farmers Market, the Delridge Farmers Market, Pike Place Market, and the Seattle Farmers Market Association. These five organizations organize over 17 farmers markets in Seattle. They work collaboratively throughout the year on promotion, vendor relations, permits, and advocacy efforts. Together, these markets facilitated over $18 million in local food from the farm to the plate, creating a stronger and more resilient food system for everyone in our region.
The full text of the proclamation highlights just a few of the collective accomplishments:
