Meet Our Farmers: Big Brother Farms
Just a few members of the tight-knit Barraza-Garcia family of Big Brother Farms.
Located in gorgeous Skagit County, Big Brother Farms is famous for their incredible summer berries, and for their gorgeous handmade wreaths, swag, and centerpieces that they bring to market during the winter. At Big Brother it's truly all in the family. The business was started by the seven Barraza siblings, including Farmer Inez, a farmers market fixture who worked for Schu Farms for over a decade, where she learned the ins-and-outs of berry farming. The Barraza siblings’ children all help support the business. Inez's son, Tony, helps work the fields and sells at farmers markets. Her daughter in law assists with the nitty-gritty business details, and nieces and nephews all play a part on the field and off. Though many hands make light work, the Barraza’s are an incredibly hard-working family who go about their day with positively contagious smiles.
“Our mission is to take the journey of becoming a successful small business... We hope to satisfy our goal of serving our communities fresh, local, and naturally grown produce. Year by year we will take every learning opportunity seriously to improve our knowledge in agricultural and customer service. Being included in Seattle Neighborhood Farmers Markets will not be taken for granted and will be a huge learning experience.”
As much as the Barraza family has learned at the farmers markets, we, in turn, have learned a great deal from them. Their positive and caring attitudes are wonderful to spend time around, and watching this multigenerational operation grow with such joy is an inspiration.
